In 2020, the Great North Run will celebrate its 40th year. Great North Run Foundation would like to use this unique opportunity to engage the public of the north east and further afield in the heritage of the world’s largest marathon in context of the changing social, cultural and industrial landscape of the region as well as events of historical significance that have impacted on the race during the last 40 years.                                                                 

Established in 2005 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the world's largest half-marathon, Great North Run Foundation has worked with some of the leading figures from the cultural world, including those based in the North East, each of whom offers an extraordinary insight into sport, art and the Great North Run. New work has been commissioned by Mark Wallinger, Fiona Banner, Michael Nyman, Jane and Louise Wilson, Douglas Gordon, Dan Holdsworth, David Almond, Bill Bryson, Julian Germain, Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, Beat Streuli, Graham Dolphin, Neville Campbell, KMA, Sir Peter Blake and David Blandy, among many others.                                                       

We work in partnership with venues and other arts organisations to present and commission work which encompasses film, photography, dance, drama, new writing, education and participatory projects.

Partners in this project are FilmNova, who produce large scale live outside broadcasts and recorded highlights of events for UK and International broadcasters including the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky Sports.

The Role

We are seeking to appoint a Project Manager who will be responsible for supporting the development, monitoring, planning and delivery of the 40 Years 13.1 Miles Project on behalf of Great North Run Foundation

Main Duties

Programme management                                                                               

  • To effectively project manage the programme, ensuring that all stakeholders are appropriately consulted, and that the programme is completed within the agreed timescale and budget provision.
  • To produce statistics, reports, executive summaries, briefing papers and documents as appropriate and necessary, for senior officers, staff, members, commercial providers, partner organisations as appropriate.
  • To coordinate the project board and ensure that it is kept briefed and able to make key decisions as required

Education and Engagement

  • Developing and planning of the 40 Years 13.1 Miles programme with partner organisations, sponsors, and consultants.                                                             
  • Coordination and delivery of the programme, in partnership with schools, community venues, volunteers and freelance providers.
  • Connect and engage local people, schools and community groups within project activity.  Provide advice and guidance to volunteers and participants in the project including freelance staff as required.

Communications & Evaluation

  • Work closely with Great Run Company’s Communications Manager to deliver the marketing, PR and audience evaluation plans.
  • Document the project and use appropriate evaluation tools to ensure the project is working effectively.

Skills

This role is suitable for an individual with experience of supporting engagement programmes within the arts and cultural sector. Ideally you will also have a keen interest in and knowledge of contemporary culture and heritage. You will need excellent project management, administrative, organisational, writing and presentation skills, as well as the ability to communicate confidently and effectively with a wide range of people. A vital aspect of the role will be responsibility for positive customer experiences; and liaising with the general public, community organisations, artists, the wider arts community, contractors and consultants, as well as Great North Run Foundation, FilmNova and Great Run Company staff.

Additional Information

This post is for 16 months. It is a part-time (0.4) post with a salary of £30,000 pro-rata per annum. The post-holder is responsible to the Director, Great North Run Foundation and will be based at The Great Run Company offices, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
